Butler County Prison Inmate Lookup

Butler County Prison is the local county jail for Butler County, Pennsylvania, and the central place to look up inmates connected to county arrests, local sentences, probation or parole violations, and certain contracted custody. A Butler County Prison inmate search requires more than one channel because the county does not publish a public jail roster. Current custody, court charges, state-prison transfers, federal custody, and immigration detention each have a different official lookup path.

Butler County Prison Overview

Butler County Prison is the only detention facility in the Butler County facility map. The official county prison page lists the facility at 202 S Washington Street, Butler, PA 16001, with phone number 724-284-5256. The operator and governing authority is Butler County, and the warden named on the county page is Beau Sneddon. The county page calls the facility "Prison," while the PREA audit identifies its facility type as a county jail.

The prison holds adult male and female inmates at minimum, medium, and maximum custody levels. Its population includes county pretrial detainees, sentenced county prisoners, probation and parole violators, other-county prisoners when housed by arrangement, and U.S. Marshals Service or federal per-diem detainees. It is not a Pennsylvania Department of Corrections state prison, not a Federal Bureau of Prisons institution, and not an ICE detention facility.

The official Butler County Prison page shows the local custody contact point and links out to jail services such as commissary, inmate mail, telephone communication, visitation, video visitation, attorney access, PREA, work release, and community reintegration. That matters because Butler County spreads operational rules across service pages instead of publishing one combined inmate handbook page online.

The service links on the county prison page are the best starting points for rules that affect daily contact with someone in custody. A reader should treat those county pages as rule sources and use the prison phone line for current status questions that depend on live facility records.

Butler County Prison Capacity and Population

The Butler County Prison PREA audit lists a designated capacity of 512. The same audit reported 233 inmates at audit time, a 12-month average daily population of 274, 2,442 admissions in the prior 12 months, and an average length of stay of 39.41 days. Vera's 2023 county jail trend data reports a separate rated capacity of 572 and a total jail population of 439, so capacity figures should be read with the source label attached.

The most recent official prison-board snapshot in the research file is the May 12, 2026 agenda, which reported 370 inmates as of May 5, 2026. That same snapshot listed 94 people on house arrest or electronic monitoring, 314 on pretrial supervision, 195 federal per-diem inmates, and 2 other-county inmates. Those supervision and per-diem numbers show that Butler County's custody system includes more than the people physically sleeping in the jail that day.

The PREA audit also describes the building layout. Eight housing units are located on the second and third floors, with four units on each floor. Housing areas include toilets, sinks, common tables, and shower curtains for privacy. Movement through the facility is controlled through elevators and direct supervision; inmates do not move through the building on their own.

How to Look Up an Inmate at Butler County Prison

No official public Butler County Prison roster, current-inmate list, recent-booking report, or public booking profile was found in official county sources. The lookup process should therefore start with the prison phone line for current local custody, then move through state notification, court, state prison, federal, immigration, and public-records channels based on the person's case status.

  1. Call Butler County Prison at 724-284-5256 for immediate custody confirmation, visitor-rule changes, and release questions that require live jail information.
  2. Use Pennsylvania VINELink or PA SAVIN at 866-972-7284, with TTY at 866-847-1298, for custody-status notification.
  3. Search Pennsylvania UJS Case Search for Butler County criminal dockets, charges, bail entries, hearing dates, warrants, and dispositions.
  4. Use the PA DOC inmate and parolee locator only after a person is state-sentenced or under DOC supervision.
  5. Use the BOP inmate locator for sentenced federal inmates in BOP custody, and use the ICE Online Detainee Locator for immigration detention.
  6. Use Butler County open records or the sheriff Right-to-Know process when a booking, custody, or warrant record is not posted online and is not available through the facility phone path.

Pennsylvania VINELink is a notification tool, not a Butler County booking profile. It can be useful when a family member or victim needs custody status alerts, but formal charges still belong in UJS court dockets and live jail status still belongs with Butler County Prison.

For federal cases, remember that Butler County Prison can house U.S. Marshals Service or federal per-diem detainees without becoming a federal prison. A person held locally for federal pretrial custody may not appear in the BOP locator the same way a sentenced federal prisoner would.

The jail is near other county government functions, but those offices are not interchangeable. Court docket questions go to UJS or the court filing office, sheriff warrant records may route through the sheriff's office, and general county records use the county open-records process.

Visiting Someone at Butler County Prison

Butler County publishes a pod-based in-person visitation schedule. Every inmate must complete a confidential visitation list with up to five adult visitors, and a visitor must be on that list before a visit is scheduled. Only three visitors may visit an inmate at one time, including minors. Each inmate receives one visit per day. Visitors must report to the lobby officer, present photo identification, identify the inmate they are visiting, secure personal items in lock boxes, pass the metal detector, and may be searched. A visitor more than five minutes late is denied.

The official Butler County visitation page gives the housing-unit schedule and entry rules. It also states that no property, photographs, clothing, or money is accepted at visitation without prior approval from the Shift Commander, Warden, or Deputy Warden.

Video visitation is separate. The county video-visitation page directs users to SmartInmate for scheduling. The official page does not publish a complete remote schedule or fee table, so users should confirm those details in the SmartInmate account or with the prison.

The county's video-visitation page points visitors to SmartInmate rather than publishing a full remote schedule on the county site.

Because in-person and video visits use different procedures, the pod schedule should not be treated as the remote-video schedule. Confirm the person's housing unit and the current scheduling rules before planning either type of visit.

Mail, Phone, and Money at Butler County Prison

Butler County's mail rules use two different addresses. Regular personal mail does not go to the downtown jail. It goes to the Seminole, Florida processing address with the inmate's full name and Butler County Prison number. Legal correspondence and publications use the 202 S Washington Street address. Publications must come directly from the publisher, and used books are not accepted. Mail must include a return name and address and is scanned and inspected for contraband.

The official inmate mail page explains the split between scanned personal mail, legal mail, publications, and prohibited items.

Booking and Intake at Butler County Prison

The Butler County family inmate handbook defines booking as the stage when an arrest is registered and the suspect is fingerprinted and photographed. The PREA audit adds that all inmates are assessed during intake, including initial safety questions and a further medical safety screening. Medical staff can request mental-health follow-up or notify security staff about concerns.

Inmates are kept separate from the general population until classification is complete. The PREA audit says inmates meet with the classification officer within 72 hours and are screened using victim-predictor and sexual-predator-predictor scales. Classification information helps determine housing, bed, work, education, and program assignments. The facility reassesses inmates within 30 days of arrival and when a request, referral, incident, or new information changes the risk picture.

Booking and classification affect more than the first few hours in jail. They shape housing, phone access, visitation eligibility, mail formatting, program availability, and the records that later may be requested through the facility, UJS, the sheriff, or a Right-to-Know channel.

About Butler County Prison

Butler County Prison is a modern downtown jail near the county government and court complex. Research notes describe it as replacing an older, smaller jail environment, with later population data showing a larger-capacity facility that can hold local detainees and a substantial federal per-diem population. The May 2026 prison-board data, for example, listed 195 federal per-diem inmates out of a 370-inmate jail snapshot.

The county's Community Reintegration Program began in June 2012 for sentenced inmates serving three months or longer. The county reintegration page describes work around treatment, parole preparation, risk reduction, addiction, family and community support, housing, documentation, employment, education, mental health, and independent living. Work release and community service require sentencing to the program and compliance with prison standards.

The Butler County PREA page lists reporting channels for sexual abuse or harassment concerns. Civilian reports can go to the on-duty Shift Commander, the PREA hotline at 866-823-6703, or the PREA Coordinator voicemail at 724-431-2190. Inmates can report through staff, request slips, and PREA hotline channels. The PREA audit also documents intake education, classification, and risk screening.

No official app-only Butler County jail roster, booking record tool, or warrant tool was located in the research. A 2025 prison-board item mentioned a sheriff app discussion, but no official App Store, Google Play, county feature page, or app-only inmate search was found. Use the prison phone, PA SAVIN/VINELink, UJS, PA DOC, BOP, ICE, and Right-to-Know paths instead.
